# VR welding simulator for trainees

Culenz's VR welding simulator lets trainees practise MIG, TIG, stick and flux-cored welding without gas, rods or metal. Each weld is scored on torch angle, travel speed and distance, so trainers see exactly what to correct.

01 — Overview

## Welding training in virtual reality

They are the four common arc welding processes. GMAW is MIG welding and GTAW is TIG welding, which uses a tungsten electrode. SMAW is stick welding with a coated rod, and FCAW uses a flux-cored wire.

Welding takes hours of practice to master, and every hour uses gas, wire, rods and metal coupons. Beginners waste most of it while learning basic hand control.

A VR welding simulator lets trainees practise torch angle, speed and distance with no consumables. They build good habits before they strike a real arc.

It is also safer for first attempts. There are no sparks, fumes, UV light or burns while beginners learn.

03 — Key features

## VR welding simulator in depth

1. 01

    ### The four arc welding processes

The simulator covers MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), stick (SMAW) and flux-cored (FCAW) welding. Each process has its own torch, technique and settings.

Trainees can start with the process their course requires. Trainers then add others as trainees progress.

2. 02

    ### Measured on every pass

On every pass, the simulator measures work angle, travel angle, travel speed and contact distance. It compares each value with the target for the joint and process.

The finished weld bead is shown on screen with any defects, such as porosity or poor fusion. Trainees see how their technique shaped the result.

Scores appear straight after each pass. Trainees know exactly what to correct on the next attempt.

3. 03

    ### Joints and positions

Exercises cover butt, T and lap joints in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. Difficulty rises as trainees move to harder positions.

Overhead and vertical welding are hard to practise for real early on. The simulator lets trainees build confidence in these positions safely.

4. 04

    ### Replica torch and training station

The simulator uses a replica welding torch or electrode holder, so trainees feel the right grip and weight. A coupon stand holds the virtual workpiece at the correct height.

Trainers can watch each trainee's view on a separate screen. That helps them coach a group of trainees at once.

5. 05

    ### From simulator to real welding

Trainees move to real welding once they reach target scores on the simulator. They arrive with better technique and waste less material.

Real welding practice and a practical test are still needed for certification. The simulator shortens that stage rather than replacing it.

6. 06

    ### Common mistakes the VR welding simulator catches

Beginners often travel too fast, hold the torch too far from the joint or change angle mid-weld. Each habit leads to weak or uneven beads.

The simulator flags these errors on every pass and shows the effect on the bead. Trainees correct them long before they waste real metal.

7. 07

    ### Pairs well with this simulator

Welding trainees often take the Culenz hot work safety module first. It teaches area preparation, permits and fire watch before they handle a real torch.

Fabrication courses also combine welding with the plasma cutting and fitter simulator. Trainees cut and prepare parts, then join them, all in VR first.

8. 08

    ### Hardware for the VR welding simulator

Most Culenz simulators run on standalone headsets such as Meta Quest 3, with no PC or cables. Some add replica tools or controls where muscle memory matters.

Where the task needs a seat, joystick or full-size tool, we supply a training station built for daily use. Every station is tested with your trainers before handover.

We advise on how many stations you need from your batch sizes and training hours. Spare headsets and controllers keep sessions running if a device fails.

9. 09

    ### Scores, records and your LMS

Every attempt is logged with the trainee's name, exercise, score, time and errors. Trainers see each trainee's progress on one dashboard.

Records export to your LMS through SCORM or xAPI, or as a spreadsheet for audits and funding reports. That gives skill councils and employers evidence of practice hours.

Group reports show which exercises most trainees find hard. Trainers can then spend more workshop time on those skills.

04 — Our process

## Rolling out simulators across centres

Many organisations start with one centre or one batch as a pilot. That tests timetables, storage and trainer routines before a wider rollout.

Standalone headsets travel easily between centres and need little IT support. Our SafeSim Uno platform updates every device and collects records in one place.

We train your trainers to run sessions and look after the equipment. They then teach new batches without needing Culenz on site.

1. 01

    ### Scope with your team

We agree tasks, trainees, sites and success measures with your EHS or training leads.

2. 02

    ### Script and storyboard

Your experts approve every step, hazard and score before the build starts.

3. 03

    ### Build and test

We build the module, test it on the headset and review it with your trainers.

4. 04

    ### Pilot

One group or site trains first, and we review the results together.

5. 05

    ### Roll out and support

Headsets, records and refresher content are rolled out across your sites, with maintenance.

05 — Planning your project

## Choosing the right partner

Checklist

### Buying checklist for your VR welding simulator

- Ask which exercises are included and whether they match your syllabus or job tasks. Check that scores measure the skills your assessors care about.
- Ask how records export to your LMS, and who updates content when your equipment or procedures change. Confirm how quickly faults are fixed.
- Finally, try it yourself with a trainer and a trainee. A short demo shows whether the controls and feedback feel right for your learners.

06 — Why Culenz

## Culenz as your VR simulator partner

Culenz is a virtual reality company with offices across India and Dubai. We build VR training simulators for institutes, employers and government programmes.

One team scopes the VR welding simulator with your trainers, builds it, installs it and supports it. An annual maintenance contract covers repairs, spares and content updates.

## Questions buyers often ask

[Back to VR, AR & MR Training Simulators for Industry](https://www.culenz.com/simulators)

### Can a VR welding simulator replace real welding practice?

No, but it shortens it. Trainees learn torch angle, speed and distance in VR, then weld for real with better habits and less waste. Real practice and a practical test are still needed for certification.

### Which institutes use VR welding simulators?

ITIs, polytechnics, skill-development centres, shipyards, fabrication companies and manufacturers. Any organisation training new welders benefits, because the simulator cuts consumable costs and adds practice time. Trainers can also coach more trainees at once.

### Can trainers set their own welding exercises?

Yes. Trainers choose the process, joint, position and target values for each exercise. They can build exercises that follow their course, from basic beads to full joints in difficult positions.

### Does the VR welding simulator show weld defects?

Yes. The finished bead shows common defects such as porosity, undercut and poor penetration, based on the trainee's technique. Trainers use these to explain why each defect happened and how to avoid it.
