This VR module trains riggers and signallers to plan and carry out lifts. Trainees choose slings, check the load chart, signal the crane operator and keep people out of the drop zone.
01 — Overview
Every lift depends on the rigger, the signaller and the crane operator working together. A wrong sling, bad signal or person under the load can be fatal.
Real lifts are rarely available for training, and mistakes there carry real risk. New riggers often learn on the job under pressure.
A virtual reality rigging simulator lets trainees plan and direct lifts safely. They make every decision and see the result before anything leaves the ground.

03 — Key features
Trainees estimate the load weight and find its centre of gravity. They check the crane's capacity against the load chart at the planned radius.
Ground conditions, wind and nearby structures are part of the plan. The module scores each factor the trainee considers or misses.
Trainees choose between wire rope, chain and webbing slings, plus shackles and hooks. They check rated loads and sling angles.
Planted faults include damaged slings and missing tags. A wrong choice shows as an unstable or failing lift in the scenario.
Trainees use standard hand signals to direct the crane operator. Clear, consistent signals prevent misunderstandings during the lift.
Radio communication is included for blind lifts. Trainees learn to stop the lift whenever communication breaks down.
No one should stand under a suspended load. Trainees set up an exclusion zone and keep people out of it throughout the lift.
The module may send a worker into the zone mid-lift. The trainee must stop the lift until the area is clear again.
Trainees often underestimate the load, ignore sling angles or skip the load chart at the actual radius. Some stand too close to the load during the lift.
The module records each decision and replays the lift from several angles. Trainees see exactly where the plan went wrong.
Rigging training pairs with the Culenz forklift and crane operator simulator. Riggers and operators can then practise the same lift from both sides.
Lift teams working at height should add the work at height module too. Many lifts involve someone working on a platform or structure near the load.
We build for standalone headsets such as Meta Quest 3, so no PC or cables are needed. Culenz can supply, set up and maintain the headset fleet for you.
Voice-over and on-screen text are produced in the languages your workforce uses, which we agree at scoping. Simple visual cues help workers who read little.
Every attempt is logged with the trainee's name, score, time and errors. Records export to your LMS through SCORM or xAPI, or as a spreadsheet for audits.
Many sites start the rigging and crane module as a pilot with one department or shift. That shows how workers respond before a full rollout.
A pilot also tests practical details, such as where headsets are stored and who runs sessions. Those answers shape the wider rollout plan.
At the end, we review results with your EHS team and agree the next steps. Most sites then add more modules or more headsets.
04 — Our process
A typical rigging and crane session takes ten to twenty minutes in a standalone VR headset. A short briefing comes first, then the virtual task, then a debrief with the trainer.
Sessions run in a training room, a site office or a corner of the shop floor. Each trainee needs only a clear area of about two by two metres.
Trainers can run several headsets at once and watch each trainee's view on a tablet. That keeps a group moving through the module in one shift.
